Since January 2025, I have been crafting my bespoke moon phase jewellery using Argentium silver. The moon phases are my signature jewellery pieces and often chosen to mark a special occasion or memory. The essence of my work is creating meaningful jewellelry and I am continually striving to improve my creations.

When I first discovered Argentium silver I was delighted to find that it offered several significant benefits, not only for me as a jeweller but also for my customers, so I was eager to try it out.

As I had anticipated, it was a joy to work with ,so I wanted to share the reasons why this high-quality silver is a great addition to my jewellery making.

What is Argentium Silver?

Firstly, let me explain what Argentium silver is. We know sterling silver, or .925 sterling silver, which consists of 92.5% pure silver mixed with other metals, typically copper. The difference with Argentium is that it contains a higher percentage of silver; the variety I use is .940 or 94% pure silver. Additionally, it includes germanium and has less copper than sterling silver.

Below are the main exciting benefits :

  • Tarnish resistant - Argentium offers numerous advantages, one of which is its outstanding resistance to tarnish. Unlike traditional sterling silver which tarnishes easily because the copper reacts with air and moisture, Argentium contains less copper and the Germanium creates a protective layer, keeping the silver significantly more tarnish-resistant. For me, this is crucial for the treasured keepsakes I make, ensuring they remain beautiful for a long time with far less cleaning needed.

  • Appearance - Argentium is a visually appealing, brighter, and whiter silver, surpassing sterling silver, palladium, platinum, and white gold in these aspects. I find its lustrous quality to be exceptionally beautiful, enhancing the striking contrast between the polished and textured parts of the moon phases.

  • Eco-friendly - Argentium is made from entirely recycled silver, which as a jeweller, aligns with my sustainability beliefs. Furthermore, its improved resistance to firescale lessens the necessity for polishing materials and chemicals and overall less hours spent producing the same amount of jewellery.

  • Durability - Argentium is a harder and more resilient silver, which means it will be less prone to scratches, giving me confidence that my jewellery will keep its beauty for longer and be cherished for many years.

  • Hypoallergenic - Argentium is hypoallergenic due to the lower copper levels, which is good news for those who are sensitive to silver jewellery. I believe jewellery is made to be worn and not kept in a box and Argentium is suitable to be wear every day.

I am confident that Argentium is the right choice for me, and I am thrilled to offer my moon phase jewellery in Argentium. Although it is a little bit more expensive, it has many benefits, whether that is due to its excellent tarnish resistance, its whiter, brighter look, or its hypoallergenic qualities, I am eager to expand on this.
